Rescued puppy

Drove out for dinner. Saw puppy in middle of road. Stopped on the side after passing it. Car's driver in opposite direction pointed out the puppy who clearly had came after our car.

Not injured and didn't resist being carried but shivered regularly. She had a collar with a bell attached to it. Asked residents of three houses but none claimed her or knew who owned her. A resident asked us to approach guard at guardhouse so that he could then inform committee. In short, guard cycled around, asking residents (took photos of the puppy) but again none claimed her.

Took her to vet. No injuries or wound. Gave deworming and anti-tick medicine but couldn't be vaccinated yet. As explained by an experience dog carer, if she was infected already, vaccination would just strengthen the virus and thereby kill her. So needed to isolate her for 10-14 days before can safely vaccinate her.

Our initial intention was just to house her for a night (no boarding place would admit her because of non-vaccinated status) and then bring her to PAWS or SPCA Selangor. Meanwhile, we posted on social media and a few interest groups to ask either the owner to claim her or someone to adopt her. We were not thinking of adopting any animal. However, we found out that both shelters are kill shelthers i.e. they regularly euthanises animals to make space for others who have higher chance of survival and adoption.

(A little backstory: about a week before this, we found a badly injured cat that in the end had to be euthanised. That was heartbreaking for us. I cried a few times. Hence, I was even more determined to try harder to give this puppy a new life)

Problem was that the no-kill shelthers that I managed to get through couldn't accept any more :( So we ended fostering her for a few days. It was exhausting and affected us physically. I couldn't do my physio exercises due to risks of injuries to either or both the puppy and I. I just wanted my life back :(

With help and support from people, we managed to advertise on social media, interest groups and personal messages to get Bella (yes, we named her for convenience purpose) adopted or at least fostered a.s.a.p as we would be going to Butterworth for a week and, after about a week rest, off to Australia for a month. We don't mind boarding her but the problem was that many boarding places require full vaccination but Bella had just gotten her first shot (after we sent her for grooming): next two shots were to be administered in the following 2 months.

Meanwhile, we struggled with toilet-training. We were partially successful: got her to poo in the common bathroom but she was adamant to pee anywhere but the bathroom. We even placed a litany of newspapers on the spots where she peed and yet she would pee elsewhere, including spots just next to the newspapers! The one that really got me was when she peed in between two newspapers omg. It was then I knew that, despite my love and compassion for dogs, I simply don't have the patience to devote so much time on taking care of them. We both were not ready to have pets and din't plan to do so.

We were getting desperate in at least getting her boarded when on the 6th day (that she was with us), we suddenly got an offer for adoption! After we agreed to pass Bella over to the new carer, another offer came!

In short, we managed to pass over to this young lady, who had two friends helping her (once of which also owned a dog). We answered all their queries and I provided as much relevant information as I could. Soon therafter, while I was driving, Ban received photos and videos of Bella from the new carer.

On the way home, I told Ban that I have to tell myself that we have done the best we could. Despite my personal preference on how she should be cared for, we can't be controlling everything. As long as Bella is given sufficient care, she will already be better off than when we first found her, regardless of how this care is provided. That's what I hope for.

Bella, I hope you'll be treated well and that you'll be happy with the new carer and friends. Take care.
