"Price" of a gift

Me: Hey, any suggestion on what to get for A's birthday? My budget is XX
A's friend: Must be at least YY (YY >> XX), otherwise don't bother.
Me: ......

Luckily, A was ok with a meal treat, which cost about half of YY. We're still friends till today.

it's the thought that matters, not how expensive or pricey the gift is, most of my memorable gift collections aren't expensive, but it's the memory that it holds makes it valuable/ irreplaceable :)
