Walking with minimal support
5 weeks after surgery was the orthopedic's advised date for the right leg to partially bear weight. Right off the bat at the lobby, the therapist asked me to start my "graduation", to which I asked for my graduation hat 😂
By the end of the session, I could walk almost normally, using only a crutch for minimal support. I had to relearn to walk: I walked awkwardly and the foot tired quickly.
There was an entire new group of exercises, saved for two from previous one (3 sets each per session, 2 sessions daily):
- Prone lying (Face down), bring heel towards the buttock. Elastic band ties both feet to provide resistance. 10x/set.
- In high sitting position, extend the leg halfway and relax for 5x, at the end of each 5th rep can hold for 10 secs. Do for both legs. Elastic band ties both feet to provide resistance. 5x/set.
- Shins on pillow with knees just at the top edge of the pillow. Sit as low as possible above the heels, rise up using glute muscles. 10x/set.
- Bridge pose. Hold at the top for 3 counts. Elastic band ties both lower thighs to prevent splaying. 10x/set.
- Clam exercise. Elastic band ties both lower thighs to provide resistance. 10x/set
- Lie on something with little friction. Knee bent, feet on towel. Push towel forward, lift up to bridge pose, pull towel back and lower down. Elastic band ties both lower thighs to prevent splaying. 10x/set
- Practice walking: stand straight, feet hip width apart. Left leg moves forward and simultaneously the right foot rolled with heel pointing up. Then left leg moves backward and simultaneously the right foot rolled with toes pointing up. 10x/set.
It was so much easier walking around since then and doing stuff. Fewer things I need Ban to help me with. I still needed to be wheeled for longer distance though.
At the next session, 3 days later, two more exercises were added:
- Walk backward. Elastic band ties both lower thighs to provide resistance. 2-3 mins.
- Walk sideway both ways. Elastic band ties both lower thighs to provide resistance. 4-6 mins in total.
The good news was that I can almost walk normally (still applying more pressure on the good leg a little more) and so I didn't need to be wheeled around when going to, say, the mall. In fact, that night I drove Ban's family out for dinner and walked in the mall with just a crutch for minimal support :)
