Dragon Age Origins

I played and finished one playthrough back in 2014. I then continued by playing Awakening, its expansion but never finished it. Can't remember why. Probably intended to just take a break and yet here we are, 12 years later :D

So, late last year, I was looking for a game to play, among my Steam library, while waiting for price to drop for some games. I remember quite fondly the detailed auto combat tactics of DAO, which seems to be absent in other games. I checked and was surprised that I had DAO Ultimate Edition, which includes all DLCs.

Unfortunately, as Ban and other players online said, some mods are needed to make the game work. Seems like bugs were not fixed? Oddly, I don't remember this during the first playthrough but then again that was more than a decade ago. Searching for the appropriate mod, downloading and installing them took quite a while. Incidentally, here's a shoutout to all the modders who make it possible to play this game bug-free and also with QOL adjustments.

In my first playthrough, I settled on a party of 3 mages and 1 tank i.e. Wynne, Morrigan, Alistair and my character as a mage. This time, I want to try something different. I still wanted at least one mage because I don't want to gimp myself that much :D Finally, I settled on Alistair as shield & board tank, Leliana as archer, Oghren as 2H melee dps and me as all-rounder mage. If I'm dissatisfied with the archer, then I'll swap Leliana with Morrigan.

So far, archer isn't...impressive? It's hard to tell without combat log and the statistic in-game doesn't paint the whole picture since archer provides lots of non-damage ulities. Moreover, Leliana's bard's songs provide useful buffs.

Here are some gameplay videos:
