Cholesterol 2018: Part 1

So after the last result and 3 more months of fenofibrate, here's the latest results:

Oct 2017          Ref. range          Jan 2018          Ref. range
Total cholesterol           6.2                 < 5.2                     4.6                 < 5.2
HDL ("good")               1.57               > 1.04                   2.01                > 1.04
LDL ("bad")                  3.9                < 2.6                      2.3                 < 2.6
Triglycerides                 1.5                 < 1.7                     0.7                  < 1.7
Total/HDL ratio            3.9                 < 5.0                     2.3                  < 5.0

So yes, finally got them all back to "normal". Yesssssh!

Consulted my usual GP and he recommended me taking fenofibrate on alternate nights for 3 - 6 months. Then take the test again but this time with another diagnostic lab to corroborate the above results. Of course, that's assuming that I continue the same diet and exercise regime, which I should!

[Doctors often prescribe a fibrate for patients who can't take a statin. Like the statins, fibrates reduce the body's cholesterol production, but they are less effective in lowering LDL cholesterol levels. In other areas, though, fibrates actually have the edge. They are substantially better at boosting HDL levels, and only two statins, atorvastatin (Lipitor) and rosuvastatin (Crestor), can match their ability to reduce triglyceride levels.]

William,
Yes, I came across this too like more than 6 months ago when the doctor first prescribed fenofibrate. He used to prescribe atorvastatin. Only reason, afaik, he changed was because of the plant-origin of fenofibrate *shrug*
