Treatment period
Doctor told my sister that although he would try his best to get things done (e.g. blood test) in time for mum to start the first ECT session on Monday, realistically it would probably start on Wednesday (it's only done on Mon, Wed and Fri) since it was already Friday afternoon. However, during our visit (my dad and I) on Saturday, I queried and found out that it would start on Monday. Great!
This was my first time seeing mum after the dramatic re-admission to the ward. She was definitely worse than 18 days ago: her hand trembled more while completing a simple art piece that my sister bought for her, much less chatty although she did ask two questions (rather than just responding to our talk), slower to respond and still had tendency to knock her head against the pillar. While concentrating on the art piece, she alerted us that she had the urge to hurt herself but, when asked, she confirmed that the activity was enough of a distraction to hold back that urge. However, once done, a few minutes later, she stood up and walked a little faster towards the pillar. My dad and I gently stopped her. All three of us agreed that she should get back in and alert the nurses.
Fortunately on Sunday she was much better: she didn't hurt herself that morning, her hands' tremor was not noticeable, and she could converse more, including asking a number of questions.
On Tuesday, her hands' tremor was virtually gone. She looked quite good and talked quite well. As with the first round of ECT, they started at a low energy level for the ECT on Monday and so it wasn't a surprise that there was no response. There was, however, a response on Wednesday. By then, mum could talk a little more. Also, her dizziness was only slight, much better than before. Hmmm maybe due to the (gradual) change in medicine?
On Thursday, she had some episodes of wanting to knock her head against pillar but was easily stopped by nurses and once later by us during our visit. Otherwise, she could talk and behave almost 'normally'.
On Saturday, her tremor worsened to as before: noticeable in both hands and legs. She also knocked her head against the pillar a few times in the morning and once during our visit. She didn't look as good as recently :(
On Sunday, she was much better: didn't hurt herself that morning and the tremor was gone.
On Monday, she said she felt increasingly uneasy: knocked her head a few times before and during our visit. It was quite sad for me to see this :( So I advised her to tell the doctor the next time they visit her. We also told the nurse. However, she was quite easily stopped and we didn't need to end the visit prematurely. Towards the end of the visit, she even smiled and told my dad a joke.
