Colonoscopy

Few months ago, I came across a "Quick Reference for Healthcare Providers: Management of Colorectal Carcinoma" by Malaysia's Ministry of Health. From there, I surmised that we should send mum for a colonoscopy because her older sister was diagnosed with colorectal cancer a few years ago. This was further confirmed with my sister's GP, who also suggested to go for OGDS (gastroscopy) as well because it's convenient to do so when already performing colonscopy. Also, it's cheaper as a package.

Upon the GP's recommendation, we made an appointment with Dr Yew at Lam Wah Ee Hospital. There, we agreed on a date for the procedure and consequently hospital staff explained the do's and don't's for the day before and right up to the procedure itself, including how and when to drink the laxative.

Thankfully mum's prep for the procedure went quite smoothly except that she couldn't sleep due to anxiety. We were asked to arrrive at the hospital at 7.30am, which means wake-up time was at an ungodly time since we live in Butterworth @@ Traffic was moderately heavy just before the bridge but otherwise it went quite smoothly. So did the admission procedure. Since the OGDS colonoscopy procedure would be done any time between 2pm and 5pm, I went back to Butterworth as planned to catch up on sleep. The ward nurse volunteered to call me once mum was ready to leave.

Ban and I made a move at 4.10pm despite still haven't received a call from the hospital. A few minutes later, I received WhatsApp message informing me of the follow-up appointment with the general surgeon in two weeks time. Another few more minutes, I received the anticipated call from the hospital.

While waiting for the elevator, mum told me the good news: there's no cancer detected during scope. Yay! There was a polyp but it wasn't "ugly" (it would be if it was cancerous). Although the doctor removed it for testing, he was sufficiently confident to assure mum that it is not cancerous.

However, together with blood test and ultrasound, there was indication of hemorrhoid, slight right renal parenchymal disease, mild loss of renal function and fatty liver. We intend to discuss these with the doctor at the next appointment.
