Wayton Express

We checked into Wayton Express after we had done all the necessary for my mum at Penang Adventist Hospital for her surgery that day

This was an 11th hour decision: it was made the day before when we were driving to Butterworth. It would be tiring for us on Monday if we were to travel twice that day from my sister's place to the hospital as it usually takes about 75 mins on average each way. Twice because one was to check-in my mum into the ward and the second time after she was out of surgery. Fortunately, for subsequent visits, mum was understanding and was ok that we don't visit her daily.

I then thought of staying within walking distance of the hospital. I came across Wayton Express that had 8.2 rating in Booking.com, which was just less than 5 mins walk to the hospital and less than 6 mins drive (at peak hour!) to the malls at Gurney Drive. There was free private parking on a first come first served basis, which we never had trouble finding a spot.

It's structured like a hostel with shared bathrooms, kitchen, dining area, tv area etc. It provided water dispenser, kitchen appliances for cooking, utensils, washing machine, washing powder, fridges, shampoo, soap, wifi. The whole place was clean and was cleaned on a daily basis. They had staff around the clock to ask help from.

It was probably an combination of 3 apartment units in a 3-storey building, with shops at the ground. Although the building looks pretty old, Wayton Express itself was in much better condition. Security was evidently not an issue as well as there were senior citizens lodging there as well and there weren't people loitering on ground floor.

We got a room with a double bed and a single bed. Everything was clean and the bed was comfortable. Oh, the rate was about RM 80 per night for the room (not including govt taxes) i.e. about RM 40 per person.

Wayton Express already fulfilled my minimum requirement of a clean comfortable room, bed and bathroom but also exceeded it by its various facilities, great location and friendly helpful staff, especially its manager Ah Soon. It's no-frill, extremely budget-friendly and if that's what you're looking for, I highly recommend it.

(sorry, no photos of the room itself but you can see some of them in Booking.com)
