Crusader Kings II: Deheubarth campaign - Crimea, Charsianon, Djerba

Image
Teutonic order was out of defensive pact because just finished volunteering to defend Arabia, my realm, against a jihad. I couldn't attack them because we still had a truce from a previous war. Byzantine, Amalfi, Bulgaria and the Mongols had their own wars. So, I thought it was safe to press my vassal King of Novgorod's claim on the the Duchy of Crimea.   A Byzantine revolt = opportunity for me to get some land. This time it was on the Duchy of Charsianon for a kinswoman. I was a little anxious that she would die before I win but luckily not. Phew. Meanwhile, the silly Byzantine Emperor continued his external war despite a major revolt at hand. Fourth consecutive war. Yet another Byzantine revolt, this time for independence. Their emperor, a kinsman, still refused to abandon the external war to deal with both of these revolts. Tsk tsk tsk. This time, I pressed a count's claim to Djerba county. After that, I joined my vassal King of Badajoz in gaining a county from another k...

Crusader Kings II: Deheubarth campaign - Romagna, Cyprus,

Image
The King of Romagna had only one county left and so I thought I could quickly claim the kingdom for a vassl baron despite the war triggering various defensive pacts. Fortunately, few came to aid him. Coincidentally, my vassal King of Hungary waged war on a holy order for a county and was losing. The holy order had sieged completely the county of Dunsk, which was formerly theirs but I joined the Hungarian war for it few years before. So at the start of my war, I was already down by about 20% warscore because of this occupied land. Well, I thought that was great because I could help my vassal indirectly by defeating the rather huge army of the holy order. My vassal finished his war shortly before mine. Yay! :)   Seeing that Teutonic Order and King of Vladmir were aiding me in defense of Arabia, and that Byzantine (with my vassal Genoa patrician) was fighting Amalfi (and Tsar of Bulgaria), I figured it might be a good time to declare war on Byzantine for the Duchy of Cyprus desp...

Crusader Kings II: Deheubarth campaign - Wasted Crusade, 5 wars, Trebizond

Image
We were wining this comfortably when the King of Vladimir decided to convert to Catholic. Booooo.   Since I was perpetually at around 100% threat level, handover time was the best way to gain as much territory as possible. Note on Byzantine: a few years after this, without my intervention, a Zee Mau became the Emperor of Byzantine, one who was a former emperor. The previous non-Zee Mau emperor died under suspicious circumstances (really, it wasn't my doing) and this Zee Mau kinsman was the most popular choice of heir then (Imperial Elective).   I was checking out whether I could press claim for anyone on a kingdom within the two neighbouring empires when I noticed that I can press claim for a number of cousins, from my mother's side, on the Kingdom of Trebizond within the Byzantine Empire. Fortunately I had a spare county to grant one of them (I chose one of the youngest who already had a child). The Byzantine emperor was busy defending against two of my vassals (just for a ba...

The AFP scare

I believed it was one of my sisters who suggested that all of us should get tested for cancer of which we are at higher risk of getting it due to family history. As a result, I got my mum to be tested with CEA and AFP. The results of the first round were good but Pathlab advised her to repeat AFP in 3 months time because her level was just under the border. To our surprise, the second result was higher (though not hugely) than the border 😬 Pathlab then recommended abdominal ultrasound. They kindly suggested Pusat Diagnostic Anda if we chose not to go through public hospials, which was helpful because we had no clue where to go. Naturally, we were all worried and anxious, given our dad's experience with cancer. Fortunately, the appointment was merely 4 days away. The ultrasound was mostly clean. Yay! There were only two minor issues: fatty liver and a slightly smaller kidney than normal. According to the doctor, fatty liver could elevate AFP. She recommended that my mum test the fo...

Crusader Kings II: Deheubarth campaign - 9th Crusade, 11 wars, Foolish kinsman

This was the first crusade called by the Pope as my vassal. For some reasons, there were no alternative valid targets. I was considering changing it to Vladimir. Since there was no suitable beneficiary for me to nominate such that upon their death, the kingdom would fold into my realm (through inheritance by an exisiting vassal king/queen), I decided to take the titles for myself. The Pope, as my vassal, couldn't really move against me anyway. Read the victory text: it's strange that I was the one declaring victory @@   Another handover, another opportunity to wage war on multiple fronts. I know I could safely attack 6 rulers but not sure how many more I could reasonably go for. I expected Ragusa and Bulgaria to put up the strongest resistance, which turns out to be true, but their army size was a little smaller than estimated. So, they all went well. Nothing particularly difficult :)   I was in the middle of two wars (not huge) when there was yet again a revolt against my kin...

Tooth: the unsolved mystery

My follow-up appointment with the endodontist was a few days after I came back from Australia. During that period, I realised that the tooth had hardly any discomfort when I applied pressure on it in the morning. I suspected that this was due to absence of mouth guard, which was in the lost baggage . During the appointment, Dr Bryan Ong asked questions, checked the tooth and took an X-ray of it (just to make sure there wasn't an infection). It all looked good. Moreover, it hardly bothered me any more, except if I pressed it or chew hard food. So I agreed with his advice of just leaving it alone and to get X-ray done yearly. To my question, he said that the mouth guard wouldn't be the cause of the discomfort as it was internal. Althought that's logical, I wondered whether it was aggrativing the discomfort. I later consulted Dr Ting, my regular dentist, and asked her opinion on whether my mouth guard had become defective or not. She didn't really examine it but instead r...

Lost

On our return trip from Canberra to KL via Melbourne, I was surprised to learn that we didn't need to check out our baggage at Melbourne. Instead, Qantas checked them through for us and sent them to MAS. I always thought that this happens only if both flights are operated by the same airlines. It seems that it also applies to partner airlines, presumably if tickets are bought from a single party, which is an additional benefit . Both flights were good, except that MAS flight was delayed by about 2 hours and so lengthening our transit time to 5 hours! Reason was "delay in loading" @@ We purchased the seats at the emergency exit and that worked out well. I'll definitely do that again. I'm pleasantly surprised at how comfortable the seat was in the MAS plane: my tailbone didn't hurt at all but I still needed the support of the small pillow the provided. My only complain was that my feet were freezing :( Unfortunately, we had a misfortune at KLIA later: our baggag...
