Renew driving license

Recently, the Minister of Transport announced that drivers who renew their driving liences directly with JPJ (instead of, say, at post office or via MyEG) and choose to renew for 10 years will need to pay fee for 9 years i.e. discount of 1 year (RM 270 instead of RM 300). The maximum period the last time I renewed was only 5 years. I was keen on the 10-year period and so might as well try to get the discount.

First thing I did was to register to use JPJ Digital Platform: mySIKAP portal. That was easy. Once registered, I searched the portal for the option of renewing driving license, which thankfuly was quite easy to spot.

The first problem encountered was somehow my credit card payment failed, despite having gone through the "input OTP" stage. Fortunately, my mobile banking app repeatedly showed that the payment didn't go through and so I proceeded to pay via online bank transfer.

Then I encountered a second problem: unlike what I read online, I didn't get any receipt after payment. Looking at the historical transaction on mySIKAP showed the transaction's status as "Waiting", with no receipt number given.

After waiting for 30 minutes, I called the helpline displayed on the portal, who then directed me to JPJ helpline (question: what is the point of the mySIKAP helpline then? lol). I chose to speak with someone about technical issue (instead of driving license issue). She said that it happened to her too. She applied for 1-year renewal (RM 30) and so she right away applied another time. Then, as advised, she had to go to JPJ office to apply for refund of the first RM 30 that she paid. It was still pending two months later 😬

However, upon hearing that I paid for a 10-year renewal, she pitied me and gave me 5 phone numbers to call. Whilte calling, I kept checking the status of my transaction in mySIKAP and 50 minutes after I paid for it, it finally changed to "Successful" omg and a receipt number was given.

I printed the receipt and went to JPJ to get the driving license card. Before that, luckily I read the review of the office at Petaling Jaya: turns out that you need to use JPJeQ app to obtain queue number, as mentioned by quite a number of reviewers. There was only one who said that they were directed to a specific counter.

I'm grateful that Ban drove me there: there was actually no parking space at first but we were fortunate that a car was leaving when we entered the parking area. I proceeded to where I presumed was the main entrance of the office and scanned the QR code there to obtain a queue number. To my horror, the estimated time of waiting was 301 minutes @@ But I think that's a gross overestimation...I hope.

In any case, I approached the nearest counter, an isolated one specifically serving senior citizens, pregnant woment etc (I think!), and enquired. It was fortunate I did that because he told me that I could go straight to Counter 20 via Door B next door and I confirmed that I should cancel the queue in the app.

The whole process at Counter 20 took a mere 5 minutes: handed the receipt, waited to be called and received the new card.

So, the current way of getting driving license at JPJ is as follows:

  1. Register with JPJ's mySIKAP portal.
  2. Apply for renewal of driving license on the portal.
  3. Print out receipt and bring it to any JPJ office.
  4. Enquire on which counter to go straight to (no need to queue, at least for the one at PJ)
  5. Hand in receipt and wait to be called to collect card.
