Dungeon Siege III: Lucas

This is the last character I played in my final run. Overall, I felt it's harder than playing Reinhart but might be about the same compared to Anjali and Katarina.

Anjali has easier ways to effect crowd control but no ability to generate additional focus, compared to Lucas. She can generate focus via a talent by inflicting critical damage. Lucas has one ability and two talents to get more focus.

Katarina's range abilties are better than Lucas but only for single targets. Lucas is far better at clearing mobs.

I largely followed this guide for my build but changed a few things due to my own experience as well as opinion in this blog post.

Abilities: proficiencies

1. Blade Dash: Lightning Precision 5

This is the second most used ability. It's great for slicing through the melee enemies to get to the ranged ones and kill the latter first. The proficiency Hemorrhage dependent on bleeding the enemies first and so I don't like it.

2. Graceful Repose: Live by the Sword 5

With this proficiency, you can heal up quite quickly by using Blade Dash and/or Wind Shear on multiple enemies. Combat rage doesn't help much with healing because you cannot stack  Graceful Repose.

3. Wind Shear: Wounding Gale 5

Most used ability. Heck, I used it in many boss fights, where fighting them at melee range was quite deadly. Don't bother with the proficiency Slowing Shear because you can kill fast moving creatures usually with only one Wind Shear, if not with a second one or Blade Dash.

4. Vanguard's Strike: Vanguard's Gale 5

I used this only on the tough enemies, including mini-bosses and bosses. It may be counter-intuitive for a melee character to push away nearby enemies away and slow them down but it makes sense in three situations: there is only one enemy i.e. the tough one; where killing the tough enemy means the immediate death/disappearance of normal enemies; where killing the tough enemy stops it from summoning more enemies.

5. Unbridled Wrath: Unstoppable Wrath 5

At first, I tried Endless Wrath proficiency but I got fed up being crowd-controlled while fighting multiple enemies and so I switched to this one. Unfortunately, I noticed that it didn't work against, say, the Archon Handmaidens. Sheesh. Felt cheated. But those instances where few. It's up to you. If you think you can avoid cc or are fine with its consequence, then Endless Wrath is of course a better choice.

These are the key abilities and proficiencies. You can sink in the extra points into whichever proficiencies you use, especially in abilities that you use often. As for me, I sunk them into Shield Wall's Reflexive Defense (quite useful) and Earthrending Strike's Tremor (rarely used ability actually).

Talents

Force of Will 5 (priority)

Wrathful Might 5 (priority)

Rejuvenation 5

Death Defying 5 (priority)

Focused Strikes 5

Focused Rage 5

If you want to go for significant critical hit chance, then Devastating Criticals 5 is a good talent to have, which was what I did before the two "Focused" talents.

The order of which you spend your points depend a lot on your playstyle. Just spend on those that help you the most at that moment.

This build doesn't have direct means to quickly generate power but because you'll get abundance of focus via Unbridled Wrath and the two Focused talents, you can freely use abilities to generate power quickly. My favourite ability to use was Wind Shear. It was also the same ability that help me to quickly heal when under the effect of Graceful Repose's Live by the Sword. You can also empower Wind Shear to stun enemies but I rarely did this as I opted to use power to activating healing, focus regeneration and the occassional Shield Wall.

When going against formidable group of enemies or a boss or a combination of these, do this:

1. If not at max focus, pop Unbridled Focus.

2. If focus is already at maximum, then Wind Shear group of enemies, pop Unbridled Focus and then Blade Dash through them. If they're still alive, use Shield Wall and hit normally. By now, they all should be dead.

3. If there are ranged enemies at the back, do the same as above but focus on the ranged enemies after using Blade Dash.

4. Against tough enemy, use Vanguard's Strike. Lucas is invulnerable when he's in the air during this ability's animation and so you can take advantage of this especially against slow hard-hitting enemies.

5. When at low hp, back off, use Graceful Repose and then Wind Shear to get back your hp and power.

Prioritise Will and then Attack. If you plan to beef up your critical hit chance, then get Agility to at least 20% and get lots of Doom. I find that it was quited difficult to get at least 35% crit chance, for Lucas, without sacrificing too much of Will and Attack.

Here are some endgame gameplays. Surprisingly, I didn't die at all in the last boss fight.
