The Colour of Inequality: Ethnicity, Class, Income and Wealth in Malaysia

This book by Muhammed Abdul Khalid is one of the several books that Ban purchased over the years that he either read little of or none at all (" The Prince " is another example). I recently just finished reading it and here are my thoughts on it. The key point in the introductoary section is that while there''s plenty of coverage on income inequality but there's hardly any on wealth inequality. This book includes a study of the latter to give a better picture of inequality.  After the introduction, the book starts with history. Yay! I love history haha. In short, the British is responsible for causing inequality among the races in terms of income and wealth. It was also during their occupation that there was an influx of Chinese and Indian immigrants.   The middle part of the book is quite puzzling. On one hand, it presented the following statistics: " Interestingly, despite the widening income gap in absolute terms among the ethnic groups, the decomposition ...

New games that didn't click

Recently, I decided to try those games in my Steam library that I've never played before. These are: (1) Crusader Kings 3 I like Crusader Kings 2 a lot and so I was looking forward to dwelve into this one. Unfortunately, I got frustrated with the lack of succession laws that would prevent my realm (built with sweat and blood) from splitting. Some players defended this feature, saying that it's a (more) accurate reflection of that period (1100 A.D., I think) and so it's more realistic. However, to me, there is a reason why many games do not go wholly realistic: it isn't fun. It certainly isn't the case for me and so unfortunately, after restarting a couple times, I gave up. (2) BioShock Remastered I quite like the game mechanic and the story thus far but I just couldn't stand how dark and scary it is. I simply couldn't play for long and soon after, I stopped playing altogether. (3) Darkest Dungeon I played this before and stopped because of a huge mistake I ...

Air fried prawns

Image
One day I checked out whether it was possible to air fry prawns or not and I found this recipe on hungryhealtyhappy.com . It took some effort to prepare this becuase the garlic, onion and parsely needed to be finely chopped. The only change I did was to use smaller prawns. Prawns are expensive, even more so for King prawns. Here's the result: The immediate problem I had was that significant amount of parseley fell to the bottom of the basket via the larger holes in the middle of the stand. Secondly, the prawns weren't "crispy". The biggest issue was that the prawns weren't sufficiently fresh (Lotus, why???): flesh was a little sandy :( If I didn't know that it should be crispy, as intended by the recipe, I thought the taste was refreshing. Wholesome and healthy. I would want to try this again but not with prawns from Lotus.

Saw these at SJMC while using the stairs:

Ichiban Nyoya rice dumpling

Decided to give it a try since it has almost perfect rating and good reviews. It was cheap too. It came in a sealed package where each dumpling was individually vacuum packed. However, I was alarmed that there was nothing to keep them cool. I thought maybe they would come with ice blocks. Fortunately, that didn't compromise its quality, it seems. Pretty good. Also, I love the size: just right. As for taste, I have two issues (ate two of them so far): (1) Not enough...spice? It supposed to have a slight peppery taste and aromatic. Previously, from a homemade seller, she said that that probably meant there wasn't enough pepper and coriander. (2) Weird to have peanutes in them. Would I buy from them again? Probably not, unless I'm hunkering for it very much.

Shoddy journalism #1

A various reasons, I chose to get my daily news from Malaymail and occassionally from Free Malaysia Today. For a while now, however, I'm irritated by the creeping shoddiness in their articles that seems to have increased during the pandemic. Here are some examples:

Assorted food #1

De Sundays Cafe at Butterworth. Value for money. Good portion. Hot honey lemon went well with the main dish. Wil definitely visit it again.   JJ Budget. Mee Jawa Goreng. A miss, unfortunately. Lack of flavouring but then I never even have eaten the Mee Jawa in its original form. Perhaps it's supposed to be mild? Lao Mao at Megah Rise Mall. Sarawak Laksa. Fyi I never hard such laksa before. Flavourful with good portion of ingredient. I won't have it again because too spicy for me. Pho Viet at Sunway Carnival Mall, Butterworth. I think this is their 4 Beef Noodle. It was delicious! I prefer their broth to An Viet's because it was more flavourful. Will visit again.
